The Master of Science in Microbiology (By Research) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a multidisciplinary postgraduate programme that integrates traditional microbiological disciplines with advanced molecular approaches, including DNA technology. The programme provides students with opportunities to undertake research in both fundamental and applied microbiology, fostering advanced scientific knowledge, research skills, and multidisciplinary expertise. Research areas include the identification and characterisation of natural product-based compounds and metabolites with antibacterial properties; nitrogen-fixation genes in local and Antarctic bacterial species; the molecular biology of bioplastic-producing bacteria; Salmonella toxin-antitoxin systems; and biofilm formation in pathogenic bacterial species. Through its broad research scope and emphasis on modern microbiological techniques, the programme prepares graduates for versatile careers in research, academia, biotechnology, and related scientific fields.
